The Regina leather is a natural product, and the easiest way to treat it like your skin! Regina has a natural oil/ moisture content, and needs to retain this in order to remain soft, supple and malleable.
The Leather should be treated once a month (or more depending on use) with Neutral Leather Cream or Renapur using a soft brush, focusing on working the cream into the entirety of the used leather, making sure to treat around the edge of the sole-unit, and in the creases that form naturally where the foot/ toes flex. Very often, these areas can be left untreated/ missed, and will begin to dry out (as the oil content will not flow throughout the leather).
As with everything, treatment of the boots should be done in moderation and increase with frequency as use/ wear increases. Over-treatment can be equally as problematic as not treating the leather by over saturating the leather with oil.
As with everything, treatment of the boots should be done in moderation and increase with frequency as use/ wear increases. Please note, that over-treatment can be equally as problematic as not treating the leather by over saturating the leather with oil. Additionally, using too much leather cream will cause it to slowly build up on the surface and creaases of the leather, giving the impression of discolouration and "white marks".
Cleaning
Leather is a natural material, but is treated differently from Suede. Initially, most marks and mud can be wiped off using a damp cloth or, for heavily muddied boots and soles, washed off with clean water. Any other basic marks can be treated by leaving the dirt/ mud/ water to dry naturally, and then brushing using a soft suede brush.
For further marks or for general cleaning, the Liquiproof Eco-Cleaner found in the Liquiproof Footwear Complete Care Travel Kit will remove the most common day-to-day marks or accumulated dirt.
Use the cleaner like a soap heavily diluted in warm water. Work it lightly into the leather with a soft brush, wiping away excess and residue with a damp cloth. Leave to dry naturally, then brush and reapply Neutral Leather Cream. Don’t be tempted to use too much cleaner or oversaturate the product, as this can cause the dye to fade!
Rain & Water
The Leather is generally fine in a degree of wet – but when done, allow the product to dry naturally, away from an artificial heat source, and brushing away the marks with a soft brush.
Over Treatment
Often, people want to keep their boots in the best possible condition they can - however, please be aware that overtreatment and over-polishing/ cleaning/ caring can be just as hazardous, or cause issues too.
Over treatment will cause the eather cream or renapur to condense and collect in the creases and certain areas of the leather, and give the impression of wearing out, white marks, discolouration or a "misty" finish.
If this is the case, you can either use a very low temperature hair-dryer to "melt" the excess cream and wax, and wipe it away (removing the excess back to the beginning) and then using a small bit of cream to re-treat the leather - alternatively, you can also use some washing up liquid and water to remove the oils.
Both treatments will draw a lot of the oils out of the leather, and so it should be marginally treated again after.
Storage
Finally its best to store your boots upright, or in their original packaging. To store the boots upright, do so with Fairfax & Favor boot trees to help maintain their original shape, and ensuring that the ankle doesn’t ‘bunch’ by flopping/ folding over when not in use.
Here's Pheebs to show you how!
